1. Slinger Francisco was born in Grand Roy, Grenada, on 9 July 1935.
  2. At 18 months old he crossed by boat to Trinidad, to join his father in Port of Spain.
  3. Older singers in the calypso tents teased him for moving around the stage so much. They said he looked “like a little sparrow”. The name stuck. “Mighty” came later.

THE YANKEES GONE

American military personnel withdraw from Trinidad after the war years.

A 20-year-old from the tents turns the moment into satire. One song takes both of Carnival’s big titles: the Calypso King crown and the Road March.

That year’s crowns Calypso King with “Jean and Dinah (Yankees Gone)” · Road March with “Jean and Dinah”

Sparrow’s reply

Jean and Dinah (also “Yankees Gone”)

“The Yankees gone and Sparrow take over now”

Lyric, “Jean and Dinah”, 1956

Sung at twenty, the line doubled as an announcement.

NEW TAX: PAY AS YOU EARN

Dr Eric Williams’s government brings in a new income tax system.

SPARROW AND MELODY AT WAR (IN SONG)

Two friends trade insults on stage, and the tents love it.

Picong is barbed calypso banter, sung as a duel. Sparrow and Lord Melody turned it into a showbiz art.

Sparrow’s reply

Reply to Melody

“They were friends and musical rivals for decades.”

THE RECORD THEY KEPT OFF THE AIR

His most controversial song. It was kept off the air for more than twenty years.

The Guardian says “Congo Man” was banned from local radio until 1989. Barbados Today says the BBC banned it for 23 years. It is still argued over, and it belongs in the record.

Content note: Sexual and racial themes.

Sparrow’s reply

Congo Man

Two readings:

“Laced with sexual innuendo and underscored with unspoken racial hang-ups… there can scarcely have been a more succinct commentary on the sensitivities and myths surrounding inter-racial relationships.”

Peter Mason, The Guardian obituary

“by far the most disturbing and complex example of the ‘phallic’ calypso”
